Short-Form Submission Call for

Tales of the Great Outdoors: Stories from the Heart of Newfoundland and Labrador

Over the past decade, the crown jewel of Engen Books' publishing schedule has been its anthology story collections -- the From the Rock series, Terror Nova, and the Engen Universe Anthologies. Now we're teaming with Gord Follett -- author of our 2021 bestseller Track Shoes & Shotguns -- to do it again!

We're looking for short non-fiction stories from Newfoundland and Labrador's top hunters and fishers about their expertise and experience navigating the great outdoors of our province! Stories will be selected and edited by the Engen Books team and Gord Follett himself, and included in the new Fall 2022 collection Stories from the Great Outdoors.

Many authors have expressed interest, but anyone can submit to be a part of this collection! Deadline is June 5 2022, but get your stories in as quick as you can, as it gives our wonderful editor more time to work with you and make sure it is as good as it can possibly be.

What does it pay?

Authors will be offered payment based on word count if their stories are accepted.

Are there minimum/ maximum word limits?

Stories should be between 1,500 - 3,000 words in length.

Can someone submit more than one story?

Of course! We may take one or both! We have had the same author in the same collection multiple times in the past.

Who can submit?

Any Newfoundland and Labrador author looking to celebrate the great outdoors in writing! There is also no age restriction. Anyone over Canadian Age-of-Consent (16 years of age) can submit and sign the print release on their own. Entrants younger than that will have to sign the print release with a parent of guardian.🙂

Who keeps the printing rights?

You do! Engen Books Ltd merely gains the right to print your story in this one collection. You keep the rights to your story and property: so if it takes off and becomes a huge hit, you keep all the benefits!

Can we send photos?

Yes! Ideally, we'd have a photo to accompany each story submitted. Just make sure you own the rights to the photo / are authorized to submit it for print!

How do I submit?

All submissions should be directed to and should be sent from a reliable email address that you check regularly (we will contact all applicants through email with the status of their submission once the deadline has passed).

When do submissions close?

June 5, 2022 11:59 PM Newfoundland Standard Time.

Do you have questions?

Email them to with the words OUTDOORS QUESTION in the subject line, we will answer you post haste!🙂

Happy Writing!

We regret that due to the volume of submissions we receive we will be unable to acknowledge receipt of entries. We will contact you after submissions close, usually within 30 days, to let you know if we accepted your work or not.
