2017 | YEAR IN REVIEW | ENGEN BOOKS

Well, out 10th Anniversary year has come and gone, and it has been a wild one. We've brought on new authors, continued existing blockbuster titles, and reached out to our fans more and more than ever before!

2017 may have been a crazy year in most other forms of news, but in Engen Books news it was all good news. :)

Call of the Sea by Amanda Labonté Series: Call of the Sea, #1

The first book in Amanda Labonté 's Call of the Sea series was relaunched under the Engen banner as a part of our 2017 celebration. The book has been a landmark for Newfoundland fantasy fiction, bringing the sensibilities of literary fiction with the intrigue and excitement of genre fiction. We're proud to have Amanda on board with us! Since this release the second book in the series has been announced for a March 2018 release, and Labonté has started a second series, Supernatural Causes, which reached Bestseller status on Amazon.

The first book in Ali House's Segment Delta Archives was released as well, introducing readers to the culture and mechanics of the world of The Six Elemental. In a world that has become accustomed to natural laws surrounding youths receiving power on their twenty-first birthday, Kit Tyler shatters those conventions by receiving the power of all six Elements. kit struggles to keep the nature of her newfound abilities secret as she tries to uncover the myth — and truth — behind The Six Elemental.

Both House and Labonté, as well as seventeen other authors, were featured in 2017's From the Rock entry, Fantasy from the Rock! Twenty-One short stories written by an eclectic mix of some of the best fantasy authors in Atlantic Canada, some of them award-winning veterans of their field and some of them new to the craft! Edited by Erin Vance and veteran science-fiction author Ellen Louise Curtis, this collection features the heartfelt, creatively charged, astonishing fiction that showcases the talent and charm Atlantic Canada has to offer. Featuring the work of Nick Morine, Christopher Walsh, Shannon Green, Heather Reilly, Ali House, Amanda Labonté, Paul Carberry & many more!

Paul Carberry saw not only the release of his second novel, The Viking Trail, but also the re-release of his first novel, Outbreak, under the Engen Books banner! Both novels have been burning up the Amazon zombie and post-apocalyptic charts!

Vacant Chairs by Linda Blagdon Series: Engen Poetry, #1

Linda Blagdon's poetry book Vacant Chairs became a #1 Bestseller in Canadian Poetry to the great joy of everyone involved in the project! Blagdon enjoyed weeks of media coverage after the event, with her story and work appearing on sites like Atlantic Books Today and The Telegram.

Questing the Dark Tower by Matthew LeDrew Series: Engen Academia, #2

We continued our non-fiction line with Questing the Dark Tower, An essay examining the concept of Stephen King’s Dark Tower as it applies to Derrida’s theory of the Pharmakon, and how that then in turn applies to other works of fiction, such as ‘The House on Mango Street,’ ‘Goblin Market,’ ‘Fables,’ and more. The book was LeDrew's first segue into literary critique.

LeDrew finished the 10th Anniversary year with Faith, a novel that returned some of the demons from Xander's past in the Black Womb novels to haunt him as an adult: the mix of old and new seemed appropriate to celebrate Engen's 10th year.

The Pitch: In this thrilling murder-mystery conspiracy novel, Xander’s war with the malevolent mob boss Stephen Fields attracts unwanted attention in the form of Engen, the sinister corporation that gave him his special abilities at birth.

Although Xander has isolated himself from others to keep from being manipulated, Engen pulls in characters from his once dormant past to try and regain control of his life and power. Can Xander overcome some of the most powerful minds on Earth to finally be free of their influence?

Jacobi Street by Matthew LeDrew Series: Engen Universe

The Pitch: Veteran horror-scribe Matthew LeDrew returns to his suspenseful roots in Jacobi Street, the thrilling new novel that takes readers into the darkest corners of the Engen Universe.

Bob had a normal life, one of many struggling artists vying for critical attention in the competitive district called Jacobi Street, until the day a mysterious unnamed painting showed up at the gallery he worked at. Since that day more and more people have been disappearing, and the captive audience trapped within the painting keeps growing…

Engen also participated in a large amount of community outreach this year, offering services via Their Patreon as well as offered classes through THE Tutoring Center. Courses are still available for the upcoming year!

We also released the much anticipated 10th Anniversary collection of Black Womb, Habeas Corpus, in a glorious hardcover collection, started a new YouTube series with the help of our friends at FictionFirst Used Books, and have started making some huge plans for things that are going to be happening in 2018! Stay tuned! :)
